International School

A non-profit institution delivers quality education

American School Hong Kong (ASHK) is a new school opening in Hong Kong and is part of an established group, Esol Education, which have 9 other schools in the Middle East. In conversation with the School Director, John Jalsevac, he informed us of his belief that children deserve the best start in life and the support that will enable them to reach their full potential. He also shared with us his view that parents typically have high expectations for their children's education and are correct to ask many questions about the school's curriculum plans, facility, resources, staff and co-curricular activities. It is our view that if you are looking for an exemplary program of studies to help your child gain admission into a highly selective post-secondary college or university, ASHK is an excellent choice.   Education Ladder has asked a series of critical questions for parents and students to consider.

Q:  Education Ladder                  A:  ASHK

Q: What is the background and vision of the founding director of ASHK?

A: John Jalsevac, the founding director of ASHK, has been working in Hong Kong for more than 12 years. He is a widely respected educator with a passion for education and a strong sense of community. Prior to joining ASHK, John was the Principal of the Upper School at the Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS) for more than 10 years.

He is experienced in developing and implementing IB programs in Hong Kong. As a firm believer in the value of the IB program's liberal arts tradition, John is a keen advocate for a holistic approach to education. John was the co-founder of the International School Sports Federation of Hong Kong (ISSFHK) and believes that each person finds identity, meaning, and purpose in life by following their interests and strengths.

Q: What is the school's educational philosophy?

A: ASHK will provide an engaging and challenging program of studies. Their focus is on the development of the whole child – from an academic, social, emotional and physical perspective. In recognition of the ever-changing global community we live in, students at ASHK will be well positioned to acquire critical thinking skills in order to analyze and synthesize information, make informed decisions, solve problems in a reflective and creative manner, and will communicate effectively.

Q: What are the qualifications of your teachers?

A: In their first year of operation, 18 teachers have been hired to work in the school of which 6 have a Bachelor’s Degree and 12 also have a Master’s or PhD or diploma. All have an additional degree or certificate in Education. Most are American and Canadian trained and a majority have prior international school experience.

Q: Which grades are ASHK starting to recruit? How many international students are studying at ASHK?

A: The school will open with Kindergarten through Grade 6 in September 2016. It is planned that a Middle School program will be added in 2017 and the High School program will be launched in 2018 beginning with Grade 9. The school is also committed to fulfilling a government regulation to provide a majority of their spaces for the children of expatriate parents now living in Hong Kong.

Q: What is the curriculum to be operated in ASHK?

A: Accreditation is to be obtained from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA). The US Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards will be used as the framework for learning which is further enriched by a strong emphasis on a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) program. This will not only enhance authentic innovation but also problem-solving skills. The school will also integrate international examples into a curriculum that is largely American based in order to enhance the international aspect of the school and to instill in students an appreciation for intercultural awareness. Numerous electives will be offered in the High School and the International Baccalaureate (IB) will be offered in Grades 11 and 12.
