Special Interview - How to guide 3 sons to get admitted to Oxford University?

A couple - Mr Chan and his wife, is one of the Hong Kong renowned A+ parents, they are granted a special written column in Economic Times Net (ET.net) to share the family related matter on a regular basis.  Their 3 sons graduated at one of the world's famous university - Oxford University in UK, the eldest son graduated with the first honor, the second son graduated with the Top first.   For what reason the Chan’s family is in the middle class family, is able to groom their kids to become “3 Superiors”.  It might not be easy for the upper class family.  How could they achieve this, do they love one another?

Mrs Chan is an experienced secondary and primary school teacher, she claims that parents who wish their kids obtained good academic achievement should remember and take note of the following points:

  • Never satisfy the kids in a materialistic way –  today’s kids can get anything they want, thus leading them lack of motivation to learn, Mrs Chan pointed out that she will supply the basic material needs, if kids want toys, they have to work hard to get what they need, she has the planned scholarship fund and “punish” scholarship fund.  For instance, kid can get $2 if she can get grade A and the kid will be required to deduct $2 if she get grade C.  However, the incentive and punishment system all depends on the ability of the children, Mrs Chan claims that it is acceptable when the kid tries his best, with improvement in academic result, they have never expected their kids need to be ranked No.1 in the examinations.

  • Decorate a home in a “Boring” environment – Kids find it difficult to concentrate to study if there are too many toys.  However, there must be a wide variety of educational reading books to be provided at home, if the kids get bored, they will get fun or enjoyment through reading the books.  Mr. Chan would like to ask questions with their kids, the content is coming from the books from home.  Kids will always want to answer the questions raised by the parents by reading alone to find out the answers, thus leading the reading interest.  This could also help to develop the relationship between the parent and the children.

  • Knowledge can change the fate –  Many kids would like to study because of the parents, however, Chan’s family has taught the children that they should study for themselves, as knowledge can change the fate, and even encourage the children to “call to find out the answer for the homework”, thus enabling the kids to sort out the questions, this type of methodology could further stimulate kid’s learning motivation.

  • Inspire kid’s thirst for knowledge  - Apart from the Questions and Answers Game, Mrs Chan further suggests parents let their children take the camera or mobile phone to take photos anywhere, and then see what their children have taken, then observe their children’s interest, and explore their thirst for knowledge.  Mr Chan pointed out that today’s parents tend to put too much focus on the language ability, and require their children to spell the vocabulary quite often, however, most vocabularies cannot be used frequently on a daily life.  He suggests parents start to explore from daily lives, thus enabling the children to develop independence and self-management capability.

Mrs Chan believe that in order to help children achieve a good academic result, they should not only rely on one self’s effort, but also the bonding love from the family, only this can help each other and achieve even better result.  Chan’s family need to develop and set up a “Layer-type responsibility system”within the family, that is, the parent will be responsible for the elder son, and the elder son to take care of the second son and so on.

Parents should provide the best to the eldest son, the eldest son should give the best to his younger brother and teach them their honor is their own honor, teach the children should love and help one another, in order to create the Oxford Family Typical example!
