Westfield Secondary School (WSS) is a private high school registered by the Ministry of Education of Ontario.  The school is located at the junction of Markham and Richmond Hill, close to the financial and wealthy district of Toronto, with comfortable environment and convenient transportation.

It offers quality seoondary education as well as the Foundation class for prestigious universities.  WSS adopts a flexible and autonomous credits management system that allow students to decide which courses they want to take each semester based on academic expertise and learning ability.  It also offers the EAP (English for Academic Purpose program), since this program has obtained recognition from the Language Canada, it has been recognized by several universities and colleges. Students who attend the EAP program of WSS will be accepted by University after completing level 1 – 3 without taking the English proficiency test like IELTS and TOEFL.  They can also obtain the certificate from Language Canada.

E: What makes your school different from others?

W:  We care about our students and parent, we develop a close communication between parents and the school through using the instant messaging apps.  Parents are able to monitor their children’s progress through an app called Schoology. Parents are kept informed by Westfield’s dedicated staff. Teachers and administrators often conference with parents to provide updates regarding the student’s academic progress or other matters of concern.

E: What are the key criteria for students to consider when applying for Westfield Secondary School?

W:   Most students in Hong Kong may spend for long hours in studying and have a huge amounts of homework and tremendous pressure, who gradually become lack of interest, confidence and engagement in learning.  WSS would rather reduce the pressure but enhance their development.   

We also require every student resides with a home-stay family. The family are carefully chosen by us and and have to undergo police and criminal checks.

E:  Would WSS be able to provide the pathway for students who graduate from Westfield secondary school? 

W:  We offer pathways with St. Clair College and Trent University. We have 3 guidance counsellors to help students select universities that are best for their aspirations and academic skills.

E:  Do you have any case (s) you can share with us where students overcome difficulties at WSS?

Yes,  a few years ago, we had a student come to our school right after attending in a local public school for just one week. The demure girl from mainland China said she had great difficulty with comprehension and note-taking in lectures. She had felt being ostracized, and not been able to fit in at the public school.  Her parents decided to withdraw her from there and switching to a private school.  Looking back, they admit they did "do the right thing" in choosing WSS, because in no time the girl found herself in great easiness and comfort in class. Later, she graduated from WSS with good grades and attended an university she had been dreaming of.

Another case is that there is a Vietnamese girl started at grade 10 with WSS last September. The small class size had astounded her, as she used to have several hundreds of students in her previous school back in her hometown. Before long, she noticed her teachers tailoring lessons specifically to cope with her maths skills. She was able to take advantage of it, and has turned things around. At the end of the first semester, she scored full in maths! That was such a boost to her confidence. Now she set out with the aim of getting a university scholarship.

In addition, WSS also offers the Foundation class for prestigious universities.  The requirement is 

• Overall average 90% of academic grade during high school
• IELTS 6.0 or above when enrolled at WSS.,
• and achieve IELTS 6.5 after graduating from WSS

E:  What are the recent academic results of WSS graduates? 

W:  We are so proud of our students for their achievements, 99% of our students got offers from their desired universities and colleges.  In the recent academic year of 2018-19, 80% graduates successfully got into the renowned Canadian Universities, including not limited to the University of Toronto, University of McMaster,  University of Ryerson, University of Waterloo, York University.

13% could get into the Top notch Canadian Colleges, 7% to US, UK and Australian Universities include University of London College.
